This article presents the history of archeological studies conducted throughout northeastern areas of Asia. It gives a short description of a «spontaneous» period of studying this territory by the participants of geographic expeditions, travelers and government officials since the 17th till the beginning of the 20th century, and by the first geologists, who came here in the 20th century. The development of archeological studies in the north-east of Russia is described, and the most important role of prof. N. N. Dikov is shown in this paper. Prof. N. N. Dikov has greatly contributed to the studies of the old traditions of the natives, including his key discoveries of the Ushki Sites in Kamchatka, also his new approaches to studying the Eskimo problem, the ethnic identification of ancient cultures in Chukotka and Kamchatka, etc. The archeological studies of the northern areas are to be continued. |
